Dr. Prem Singh – Complete Introduction

Dr. Prem Singh did his higher studies (BA Hons. Hindi, MA Hindi, M.Phil., Ph.D.) from Delhi University. He taught there almost for four decades and retired as professor in 2021. He was a fellow at the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), Shimla, from 1991 to 1994 and worked on the topic ‘The Idea of Revolution in Hindi and Bangla Novel’. He taught at Vilnius University, Lithuania, and Sofia University, Bulgaria, as a visiting professor.

He has published 4 books of literary criticism; 7 books of political commentary; 2 volumes of Hindi translation of selected writings of eminent Marathi writer and socialist leader Sane Guruji; 2 poetry collections; one short story collection along with several articles/reviews of literary criticism and political analyses in various Hindi/English journals/anthologies including Indian Literature, Mainstream Weekly, Janata Weekly, Economic and Political Weekly, The Radical Humanist, PUCL Bulletin. His articles are also published in various online portals/websites such as hastakshep.com, countercurrents.org, counterview.org, muslimmirror.com, thecitizen.in, thescribe.in, janchowk.com, lohagar.blogspot.com, socialistpartyindia.blogspot.com, sabrangindia.in, lohiatoday.com, theasianindependent.co.uk, samajweekly.com etc. He has been a regular contributor to several Hindi and English dailies for the last four decades. 

He participated and presented papers in more than 60 national and international seminars.

He has been an associate editor of SANCHA, a Hindi journal brought out on the pattern of EPW, published from Delhi; assistant editor of monthly Hindi journal NAYA SANGHARSH, a new incarnation of SANGHARSH, brought out and edited by Acharya Narendra Deva, published from Delhi; member, editorial board of STUDIES IN HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES, an Inter University Center’s (IUC) research journal published from IIAS, Shimla; member, editorial board of CHETNA: MANAV SANDHAN PATRIKA, a Hindi research journal published from IIAS, Shimla; member, editorial board of SAMAYIK VARTA, a monthly Hindi magazine of socio-political issues published from Delhi. 

Dr. Prem Singh joined the socialist movement in his college days and worked with Samajwadi Jan Parishad from 1995 to 2009 and Socialist Party (India) from 2011 onwards. He contested Lok Sabha elections in 2009 and 2014 from East Delhi constituency. Inspired by Gandhi and socialist thinkers/leaders like Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Acharya Narendra Deva, Jai Prakash Narayan, Kishan Patnayak and Schidanand Sinha Dr. Prem Singh, in his writing and activism, is known for his uncompromising stand against the nexus of neo-imperialist-communal forces which have occupied present-day political-economic-social sphere. He further propounds the idea of alternative politics and development while presenting a comprehensive critique of neo-liberalism in his writing.       

He has travelled to Nepal, UAE, Lithuania, Latvia, Finland, Sweden, Poland, Germany, England, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Greece, Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands, Romania, Russia and Turkey.
